About us

Canped.ca was created by two experts in eating disorders, Dr. Wendy Spettigue and Dr. Mark Norris, as a support tool for parents/caregivers and health care providers who provide care for youth suspected of having an eating disorder.

Both Dr. Spettigue and Dr. Norris work at the Regional Eating Disorder Program in Ottawa, ON which is located at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. They have been treating children and adolescents with eating disorders for a combined total of 25 years and have received numerous grants to conduct research trials on various aspects of care for adolescents with eating disorders.

Mark Norris

Dr. Spettigue is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, specializing in the treatment of children and adolescents with severe Eating Disorders, and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa. She also served as the Psychiatric Director of the Regional Eating Disorder Program at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario from 2000-2013. After completing a Masters' degree in English literature, she received a degree in medicine from Queen's University in 1991. Following 3 years of pediatrics training and four years of psychiatry residency, she moved to Ottawa to complete a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (specializing in adolescent eating disorders). In 2009 Dr. Spettigue received the CHEO Research Institute's Award of Excellence for Research in Psychiatry.

Dr. Norris is a Pediatrician specializing in adolescent health and eating disorders as well as the Medical Director of the Eating Disorder Day Treatment Program at CHEO. He is also as Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Norris received his medical degree from Memorial University and completed a clinical and research fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He is an active participating member of the Eating Disorder Association of Canada and the Canadian Pediatric Society.

Dr. Spettigue and Dr. Norris have authored numerous papers and book chapters that relate to eating disorder care and treatment. They have collaborated extensively over the years on multiple initiatives and have presented alone and together on numerous occasions to local, provincial, national and international audiences. In addition to their research and educational endeavors, Drs. Spettigue and Norris (along with other colleagues) offer training to other professionals and teams on how to help youth with eating disorders. In addition, they have held leadership positions with various organizations provincially and nationally that aim to optimize the care of youth with these illnesses.
